Gameplay & AI Programmer

Hey, I'm Hugo — a father, programmer, gamer, and recovered WoW-aholic. Most of my gaming time these days goes into medieval fantasy worlds or co-op adventures with my spouse on the couch. The same thing pulls me into both gaming and programming: there's always a problem to chew on.

Background

The Game Assembly is a two-year programmer education built around team projects. Every few months a new team forms and ships a game alongside artists, level designers, and animators — the closest thing to a real studio cycle a school can offer. Most of those projects are built from scratch in a custom C++ engine, which meant writing systems from the ground up: rendering, physics, AI, tools, the works. Across eight team projects I kept gravitating toward AI and gameplay — the parts that decide how an enemy behaves, how an ability feels, or how a designer can iterate without a programmer in the loop.

Right now I'm doing my internship at Filimundus, contributing to released mobile titles in Unity — including BRIO World – Railway. Working on something that's actually in players' hands has been a different kind of education entirely, and one of the most useful stretches of the program so far.

What I Bring

  • Two years of building games end-to-end in a custom C++ engine — eight team projects across 2D and 3D
  • Contributed to released Unity titles on iOS and Android at Filimundus, including BRIO World – Railway
  • A real focus on game AI — GOAP, Behavior Trees, Steering Behaviors, State Machines
  • Designer-facing tools that save iteration time — wave managers, navmesh integration, editor utilities
  • Comfortable below the gameplay layer — rendering, shaders, physics (e.g. a Verlet rope/chain system), and profiling
  • Day-to-day work in cross-disciplinary Agile teams with artists, designers, and animators

Let's Talk

If any of this sounds like a fit — or if you just want to ask about a project — get in touch. I'm easy to reach by email, happy to hop on a call, and always up for a coding test.
